Horny Goat Weed has one of the more colorful names in herbal medicine — and one of the more legitimately interesting mechanisms behind it, thanks to a specific compound called icariin.

What Horny Goat Weed Is

Horny Goat Weed (Epimedium sagittatum) is a flowering plant used for centuries in Traditional Chinese Medicine to support male vitality, energy, and what practitioners historically described as "yang" — a category loosely translating to vitality and warmth in the body. Modern research has focused on isolating and studying its primary active compound: icariin.

The Mechanism Behind Icariin

Icariin has been studied in laboratory research for its role as a mild modulator of the PDE5 pathway — the same general pathway targeted by leading prescription erectile dysfunction medications, though at a dramatically lower potency and through a different delivery mechanism entirely.
